Which Coffee is the best?
One question we hear a lot is asking which is the best best coffee. Is it from Columbia? Is it Blue Jamaican? What about Kona coffee from Hawaii or coffee from Kenya?
As you continue along your coffee adventure, you will probably find certain coffees that you prefer, and they are likely going to be grouped within particular growing regions. That is because coffee depends a great deal upon the particular soil and weather and growing conditions. So much so that even coffee grown in the same region can be different just a short distance away.
The unique flavors of coffee start with the area where it is grown, the coffee plant, the care in growing the crop, and how it is harvested. For example, soil conditions and the amount of water can produce unique flavors that can even vary from crop to crop.
All of this results in a a wide variation of taste and aroma for coffee.
Of course, even after the plan is harvested, the best coffee beans could be ruined by bad roasting. Then there is the grind as well.
But obviously, the beans are the start to the best cup of coffee. The market has some indication of what is the "best coffee," based on the prices being charged. For example, 100% Kona coffee from Hawaii or Blue Jamaican coffee is a lot more expensive than coffees from Brazil or Colombia.
However, for coffee many times price is more a function of availability than quality. While Kona and Blue Jamaican coffees have wonderful reputations and their own distinct, prized flavors, there are excellent coffees from Brazil and Columbia. But Brazil and Columbia are two of the largest coffee producing countries, which means their coffees are not as scarce as coffee grown in Hawaii or Jamaica.
I certainly do suggest trying Kona and Blue Jamaican. When you get Kona coffee, pay attention to the type of blend because most Kona coffees are not 100% Kona. The same applies for Blue Jamaican. They are so expensive that other types of beans typically are blended with then,
For coffee, the only rule is freshness and taste. Experiment and advance your coffee education. Learn what you like and let your taste buds lead you to your own favorite type of coffee. Perhaps you will spend time exploring coffees from a particular country or region or even a single plantation and then move onto something different.
This reminds me a bit of how people tend to be preoccupied with getting things "just right" or having "just a bit more." That yearning for what's next or what might be better doesn't allow for true enjoyment of the moment. If you are a dog lover, you know how your pet can be happiest at any given moment. For that dog, the current walk is the "best walk ever," the current meal is the "best meal ever," being petted and greated by their owner is the "best greeting ever" and so on.
So, make this cup of coffee your 'best cup ever!" Enjoy today's pleasures even while you're looking ahead to continuing your lifelong lifelong journey along the coffee adventure! Just don't worry about finding the "best coffee ever"... you should find what is the "best for you" right now.
