There are some great automatic coffee makers to buy between $50 and $100. We will give you some common sense advice about finding the right coffee maker under $100 because with all of the choices it can get confusing unless you know what you're doing.
For under $100, you wlll be able to move up from the manual drip coffee makers like the French press and cone filter. You can chose from a wide range of automatic drip brewers, including some that grind the coffee too. There are also some some single serve brewers. We probably wouldn't suggest getting an expresso machine for under $100 although there are actually some very basic models that you could try.
We've put together our advice about brewers you can get for less than $100. We've also included links to product pages, mostly Amazon.com. (Amazon.com has great prices, fantastic convenience, and you can read more detail about our recommendations.)
Drip brewers
You might not actually be able to taste the difference between a coffee made on a $40 drip brewer, or a $100 drip brewer. The difference will be that the more expensive brewer will have more features, a brand name, and perhaps more reliability and overall better engineering.
One very popular and reliable drip brewers for under $100 is the Cuisinart DCC-1200 12-Cup Brew Central Coffeemaker. It has a variety of desirable features like a built-in water filter, gold-tone permanent filter and a fully programmable timer for more convenient brewing.
Grind and brew coffee makers
For under $100, there are a few coffee makers that will grind your beans too. These coffee grinder is built into the brewer. You place whole coffee beans in the grinder, press a button and let the machine grind and automatically brew your coffee.
This is an especially good choice if you get lazy about grinding your own coffee. If you have been buying ground coffee, instead of grinding your own whole beans, a grind and brew system would be perfect for you. With the grind and brew coffee maker, you will become a whole-bean fan again, because you can enjoy freshly ground coffee the quick and easy way.
There are a couple of disadvantages of grind and brew coffee makers. First, there are more parts to break down. Secondly, you are stuck with the grinder on your brewer. You should look for a coffee maker with a burr type grinder. Some people like cone shaped grinders. You might not be able to get your first choice. Remember, too that cofee beans need to be stored in an air tight container. Some of the grind and brew systems let you put a supply of beans into the hopper. Try to use those beans the same day if at all possible instead of letting the beans lose their flavor outside of their airtight container.
We recommend the Cuisinart DGB-550BK Grind-and-Brew 12-Cup Automatic Coffeemaker as an excellent choice.
Single serve coffee makers
For under $100 there are a few single serve coffee brewers available. However, the choices are fairly limited and if you really are on a budget the single pod brewers (K-Cup, coffee pod, and T-Disc) tend to cost more per cup of coffee because of the single serve coffee continers.
These brewers are tops in convenience and freshness, because they make just one cup of coffee at a time, using sealed ground coffee containers. For under $100 we would suggest buying one of these as your secondary coffee maker, for those times when you want a fresh cup of coffee without any mess or fuss. After all, there are times when its nice to enjoy a tasty cup of coffee without having to grind the beans first.
When we think about the coffee pod brewers you can get within this price range, the first thing to consider is the coffee supply available for the particular machine. For coffee pods we like the Melitta MES2W OneOne.
The alternative at this price range that we also like are the Keurig K-Cup brewers. Most are over $100 but there are two Keurig brewers at under $100: the Keurig B40 and the Keurig B30 Mini Brewer
. These work like the more expensive Keurig models, but are more basic and lack extra bells and whistles. You may even prefer the B30 over the other Keurig models, because the B30 is designed as a "mini brewer." It is much smaller and designed for use where you need to save space, like on a crowded kitchen counter, dorm room, RV or vacation cabin.
Another choice to look at if you want to spend a few dollars over $100 is the Senseo HD7832 Supreme Single-Serve Gourmet Coffeemaker with LCD Display.
